The GMRWC Betty Greer Schoolarship

The Greater McLean Republican Women's Club (GMRWC) awards a $1,000 scholarship annually to a graduating high school senior who resides in the Dranesville District of Fairfax County. The award is based primarily on the student's involvement in promoting Republican activities. It also takes into account the student's academic and other achievements.

The scholarship is named after Betty Greer, a life member and past president of the GMRWC. Born and raised in Australia, Betty married Ben Greer, a US sailor, in 1947 and came to the Washington area. She became a U.S. citizen in 1960 and spent years tirelessly volunteering in Republican politics at local, state and federal levels.

In addition to her leadership role in the GMRWC, Betty served in many capacities on the Virginia Federation of Republican Women Board of Directors. In 1985, she was the winner of the National Federation of Republican Women "Tribute to Women" award.

Betty also volunteered at her church, in her children's schools and with other charities, while she and Ben raised five children. She

passed away on October 2, 2010.
